In short, dental tartar is the thickening or calcification or stiffening of dental plaque. This plaque is a whitish substance caused by the accumulation of bacteria and proteins contained in saliva, food waste and other kinds of residues that have not been completely eliminated on our teeth. It usually appears first on the lower incisors and spreads to the other teeth and may even extend below the gum line. Unlike plaque, tartar cannot be removed by brushing.
